Aarhus Arc : Three acts
2012

Aarhus School of Architecture

The ‘Aarhus Arc’ was built by 200 masters students at the Aarhus School of Architecture. In an act reminiscent of the moving of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the arc was carried in large segments through the snow and (re)constructed within the school’s theatre. Functioning as a wall, a drawing board and a film screen, the arc divided the space; inviting people to whisper through it, draw through it, cut through it. Through these acts of empathy for those on the other side, the arc transformed into a work of architecture, a theatre, a film, a drawing, a conversation, an action, a school, and a contribution to a city culminating in a series of performances, of magical moments, of smoke and fire! This project sparked the first summer workshop at Arts Letters & Numbers and set in motion our campus in Averill Park. Immediately upon returning to NYC from Denmark, we went to visit the Mill and started planning for the first summer workshop. The project was directed by David Gersten, and cotaught with Tine Bernstorff Aagaard, Ben Clement, Sebastian de la Cour, Laura Genes Ann Bush Hansen, Thomas Lillevang, Aida Miron, Mads Hulsrøj Peterson, Anne Romme, Anette Brunsvig Sørensen, Chris Thurlbourne, Uri Wegman, and Jane Willumsgaard as well as Alberto Perez Gomez and Juhani Pallasmaa, via skype.
