Tristan Duke
Tristan Duke is an artist and inventor working at the intersection of art, science, and contemplative practice. With a special interest in optics, perception, and illusion, Duke explores visual ways of knowing, inventing new mediums and inviting viewers to experience new perspectives. As a cofounder of the Optics Division of the Metabolic Studio, Duke has helped to define the Los Angeles based collective’s monumental, performative, photo-based practice over the past ten years. Using a technology of his own invention, Duke has created holograms on vinyl records – his record hologram artwork has received international acclaim, appearing on albums ranging from the likes of Jack White, Guns N’ Roses, and the Star Wars motion picture soundtrack.
Duke’s fine art practice blends true technological invention with rigorous artistic inquiry. His artworks range from photo-based, to sculptural and installation-based works. Often Duke’s works function as optical or perceptual devices, engaging viewers in unexpected and dynamic ways.
Duke has spoken widely on art and technology at venues ranging from MIT’s Media Lab and the Santa Fe Institute, to LACMA, the Getty Center, and the de Young Museum. He has exhibited internationally including at the 59th Venice Biennale Collateral; LACMA; the Exploratorium; MASS MoCA; the Smithsonian Hirshhorn; and Les Rencontres d’Arles.
